Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle blends sacred tradition with playful irony. Though grand in form, tongue in cheek, he dubbed it “petite”, questioning if it was indeed sacred or simply theatrical. Scored for piano, harmonium and twelve singers, “men, women and castrati”, the work reflects his operatic roots and irreverant charm, offering a heartfelt farewell in music.
